Scenario-based eLearning (Bilingual)

This eLearning experience was designed and developed for URBE University to inform prospective clients about the student visa process. The goal was to improve the decision-making skills of international students who plan to study abroad.

  • Audience: Prospective international students

  • Responsibilities: Storyboard, Visual Design, eLearning Development

  • Tools Used: Articulate Storyline, Vyond, Canva, AWS (Amazon Web Services)

Problem and Solution

The client is a university that recently obtained accreditation to welcome international students under the F1 Visa program. The challenges the university faces are a lack of knowledge regarding visa requirements and the misconception that the application process is complicated and financially burdensome. Without an effective e-learning tool to guide them through the visa process, potential customers are more likely to misinterpret the requirements; leading to inaction and missing the opportunity to study in the United States with URBE.

After conducting a needs analysis and collaborating with subject matter experts to create an action map. I determined that a scenario-based eLearning experience could help solve the problem. This approach will help learners practice making critical decisions and experience the consequences of their actions before even setting foot into the university. This decision was made after performing a needs analysis and collaborating with subject matter experts.

Process

This project involved the creation of several animations, incorporating variables, triggers and layers using Articulate Storyline software. Within a few hours, I developed a storyboard and a few initial slides to present to the University's staff. After a week of testing and collecting feedback, I improved my design by adding Vyond animations and integrating links to the university's contact information. Below you will see an overview of the steps I took during the development of this project.

Action Map

Action mapping is an effective strategy to identify high-priority actions, with practice, can lead to measurable improvements in performance. According to Cathy Moore, author of 'Map It', the action mapping process focuses on defining what people need to do rather than what they need to know. This approach avoids “information dump” style of training, which is ineffective but very common.

Also, this method effectively gathers information and facilitates efficient communication with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs). Its strength lies in its ability to focus on gathering actionable outcomes rather than getting too many details in the discussion.

Below is the action map I created for my client with their objective in the center surrounded by the specific actions users need to take to reach each objective.

Storyboard

To ensure an enjoyable user experience, I mapped out objectives and outlined the text, visuals, and programming details for each screen using a text-based storyboard. Although there were slight alterations during the testing phase, this document was crucial in ensuring I was effective in the development process by prioritizing the end user's perspective and addressing their potential concerns.

Interactivity

After carefully planning the visual layout and connections of each screen, I developed an interactive prototype using Articulate Storyline to test the quiz’s functionality and to get feedback on the visual design. I shared it with the SMEs and three learners, who suggested maintaining a consistent quiz format on every slide, instead of changing the interaction type on each screen.

Below is a screenshot of one section of triggers and layers I added to customize this project; these triggers make the quiz interactive and ensure users experience the consequences based on their answer choices.

Full Development

I received outstanding feedback for this project, both from URBE University who I created the eLearning experience for and learners. The data I collected from the SMEs included that others thought the project was visually appealing, engaging, and explained complex concepts in easy-to-understand terms.
